My Thoughts about Kappa Kappa Iota
“KKI advocates for the support and continuous improvement of public schools. They do this through professional development and sponsoring scholarships for education majors. This year will mark the 100th anniversary of KKI, a national organization that started in Stillwater, OK. KKI is one of the oldest education organizations and something our community is proud of. I have been proud to be part of the organization since I started teaching at OSU in 2012, and I love engaging with our future teachers in programs outside of classes. I have seen so many of our student members develop great leadership skills from their participation in KKI and benefit as scholarship recipients. One of my favorite events is our annual initiation when our state officers and longtime members share their stories and their generosity with our student members with time-honor traditions and forward-looking goals.
I am originally from Texas where I taught Kinder, 1st, 3rd, 4th, and a multi-age grades 3 & 4 for over 20 years. I was also a literacy instructional specialist and a dyslexia therapist for 9 years. I LOVE the OSU spirit and am honored to be part of the teacher education faculty here. My professional interests include reclaiming joy in education through inquiry, interest, and new literacies. I am passionate about supporting readers and writers who struggle and helping teachers and teacher educators integrate technology to amplify teaching and learning.
My husband, Mark, and I have four grown children and five grandchildren. We love to travel, camp, cook, and garden. I love to read and do most of my hobby reading via audio books.

Hello! I graduated from OSU with an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education (2004) and a Master’s degree in Reading and Literacy (2010). I have taught for 17 years. (I can’t believe it has been that long!) I taught 4th grade for 11 years in two districts and then spent one year as a reading specialist. Since then I have been at OSU teaching elementary social studies, primary math, and working with the ExCEL Experience and student teachers.
I am married to Curtis, a farmer/rancher, and live in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. We have two beautiful kids. Katie is very, very social and loves to make friends everywhere she goes. She also loves to sing, roller skate, and play with other kids. We like to say Jake has a new trick each week. He is constantly learning new things that usually include climbing or exploring places he doesn’t need to be. The child is into everything!
My Thoughts about Kappa Kappa Iota
“I have really enjoyed my time with KKI thus far. It has been a wonderful time to learn from and with fellow educators. I can honestly say I have learned something new in every meeting! I also enjoy the community that has been built amongst the members."
